IMO COUNCIL EXPANDS TO 40 MEMBERS
William A. O’Neil, secretary-general of the International Maritime Organization, said eight new members have come onto the IMO Council with the entry into force of the 1993 Amendments to the IMO Convention, effective Nov. 7.
The 1993 Amendments expanded the size of the IMO Council from 32 to 40 member states.
“This enlargement will insure that the council better represents the interests of all 162 IMO member states,” O’Neil said.
The new members are Bangladesh, Chile, Denmark, Ghana, Honduras, Kenya, Lebanon and Venezuela.
The augmented council will meet for the first time from Nov. 25-29 at the IMO’s headquarters in London.
The IMO is a United Nations specialized agency with responsibility for the safety of shipping and the prevention of marine pollution.
