IMOÆS OÆNEIL TO DISCUSS POLLUTION PREVENTION WITH EU VP
William O’Neil, secretary-general of the International Maritime Organization, is expected to meet the vice president of the European Union, Loyola de Palacio today in Brussels to discuss measures to prevent the recurrence of accidents such as the breakup of the tanker 'Prestige' off the coast of Spain last November.
O’Neil is expected to discuss regulatory constraints aimed at preventing future incidents, as well as immediate follow-up steps after a spill occurs, according to an IMO statement.
The IMO is the United Nations Specialized Agency with responsibility for the safety of shipping and the prevention of marine pollution.
