INOUYE AIMS TO RAISE MARADÆS CARGO PREFERENCE PROFILE
Sen. Daniel K. Inouye, D-Hawaii, has introduced legislation and a resolution in the Senate which sends government agencies a clear message to conform to the U.S.-flag shipping requirements of the government’s cargo preference laws.
The bill (S. 64) and resolution (S.R. 11) seeks to ensure that federal agencies adhere to existing cargo preference laws, and would grant the Maritime Administration more authority to respond to violations through penalties and/or sanctions.
' Inouye, a long-time member of the Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee, has introduced similar measures at the beginning of previous sessions of Congress as an expression of his support for the U.S. merchant marine.
