ITC INVESTIGATES EFFECT OF ELIMINATING U.S. TARIFFS ON MEXICAN FOOTWEAR

The U.S. International Trade Commission starts investigation into the economic effect of eliminating U.S. tariffs on imported Mexican footwear under the North American Free Trade Agreement.

The investigation, NAFTA: Probable Economic Effect of Accelerated Tariff Elimination (Inv. No. 332-433), was requested by the U.S. Trade Representative. The USTR said in its letter to the ITC that the United States and Mexico have agreed to enter consultations regarding the accelerated elimination of these import duties on Mexican footwear.

The NAFTA Implementation Act authorizes the president to proclaim any accelerated schedule for duty elimination that the United States may agree to with Mexico and Canada, subject to consultation requirements of the Act. The president obtains the ITC’s advice regarding the proposed actions.

The ITC’s report will be submitted to the USTR by Oct. 12. For more information about the investigation, contact the ITC’s Office of the Secretary at (202) 205-2000.
