JAPANESE DIET TO VOTE ON PORT REFORMS IN YEAR 2000

The Japanese Diet will consider port deregulatory legislation next year,
according to Japan’s three major containership operators.
In a progress report filed with the Federal Maritime Commission,
"K"
Line, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines and NYK Line said that the reform bill proposes to abolish
stevedore licensing and the current rate approval system applied to the stevedoring
industry.
The carriers said the reforms are expected to encourage new entrants and more
competition in Japan’s port transportation services industry.
