Johnson to coordinate U.S. Coast GuardÆs international activities
Katherine Johnson has been appointed director of the U.S. Coast Guard’s international affairs staff and foreign policy advisor to Adm. Thomas Collins, the commandant of the service.
Her job will be to coordinate the international policy, participation and operations within the sea service and with other U.S. agencies, foreign governments and international organizations. Checking vessels and foreign ports for compliance with global maritime standards, interdicting drugs and migrants, enforcing environmental and safety laws and providing technical assistance and training to foreign governments involve constant dealing with foreign governments and international law.
Johnson served at the Pentagon as principal director western hemisphere affairs in the office of the undersecretary of defense for policy.
