KOTAITE RE-ELECTED FOR 10TH TERM AS ICAO COUNCIL PRESIDENT
Dr. Assad Kotaite was elected for a tenth consecutive term as president of the Council of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). His new term runs to 2004.
In his acceptance speech, Kotaite alluded to the importance of global cooperation among the Contracting States of ICAO and the other members of the civil aviation community as they address new aviation challenges of this century–particularly new security challenges after the Sept. 11 attacks.
“We must work together to live up to this challenge,” Kotaite said. “Air transport fundamentally remains the safest mode of mass transportation ever.”
Kotaite’s association with ICAO began in 1953 when he was named by Lebanon to serve as a member of the Legal Committee of ICAO. Before presidency, he was ICAO’s Secretary General from 1970-76, after representing Lebanon on the ICAO Council from 1956-62, and from 1965-70.
