KUEHNE & NAGEL TO MANAGE HAMBURG LOGISTICS CENTER FOR AIRBUS
Kuehne & Nagel said it has signed an agreement with Airbus Deutscheland GmbH to handle all production-related logistics activities for the aircraft manufacturer's A380 program.
The contract includes the project management for planning, construction and operation of a dedicated logistics center in Hamburg.
Stute Verkehrs-GmbH, a Bremen-based Kuehne & Nagel subsidiary, will manage the Airbus logistics center. STUTE operates some 10 logistics centers in Germany.
The new center will be developed on a 60,000-square-meter plot in Hamburg-Hausbruch, about 20 kilometers from Airbus' plant in Finkenwerder. Materials for the production of the A380 as well as for the existing aircraft program will be stored in an area covering 20,000 square meters.
The center will have a fully automated small parts storage and retrieval system with 37,000 places, a rack system with 4,800 pallet places and storage places, as well as an information technology platform designed by STUTE engineers.
Scope of service encompasses the entire supply for production, including direct delivery of transport trolleys to the production assembly area and the management of incoming materials, warehousing, the provision of parts as well as empties management.
Plans also include integrating additional services in the logistics center and to locate system suppliers there.
Work on the logistics center will start at the beginning of 2003 and are scheduled for completion in the first quarter of 2004. Kuehne & Nagel and STUTE are also planning to construct and manage a logistics center for Airbus in Bremen.
