LONG BEACH EXPLORES USE OF ELECTRICITY TO POWER SHIPS AT BERTH
The Port of Long Beach has commissioned a study to determine whether on-shore electric outlets can be used as a substitute power source for auxiliary diesel engines while a ship is at berth to reduce air pollution.
Environ International will analyze factors such as vessel power demands, equipment needs, estimated costs and potential emissions reductions during the one-year, $350,000 study, the port said Tuesday.
According to the South Coast Air Quality Management District, about one-third of all vessel emissions in Southern California occur while vessels are at berth.
