Long Beach management structure changes highlight environmental focus
With the interface of port activities and the neighboring community a growing concern, Port of Long Beach Executive Director Richard Steinke unveiled a changes to the port’s management structure Monday as part of a decade-long strategic planning document.
To improve organizational effectiveness, the port said in a statement, Steinke will elevate the environmental planning division to top-level “bureau” status and add the new position of deputy executive director.
With the organizational changes, the port’s harbor department will be dividing its current development bureau into two distinct bureaus: engineering and environmental management and planning. Both had been divisions, which are grouped under the bureaus. Environmental management and planning will be elevated to bureau status, recognizing that environmental planning has become a central part of port operations, the port said.
“Environmental concerns are a primary focus of our business, and the new organization better reflects that,” Steinke said.
The Port also will hire a deputy executive director, who will report to Steinke.
