LUFTHANSA CARGO TO IMPOSE SECURITY SURCHARGE
Lufthansa Cargo said it will impose a security surcharge of euro 0.15 (about 14 cents) per kilogram, effective Oct. 8.
The company said the move follows the withdrawal of Lufthansa Cargo's war-risk insurance cover by the insurance companies in the aftermath of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania.
The freight airline has experienced additional costs, including higher insurance premiums and stricter security requirements, and anticipates further increases in costs.
The surcharge is structured only to cover those additional costs by Lufthansa Cargo identified to date, the company said, and charge may be adjusted.
