Maersk Sealand transfers Med services to group-controlled hub
Maersk Sealand said Tuesday it is transferring several Mediterranean container services and feeder operations from the Mediterranean transshipment hub of Gioia Tauro, Italy to the new Maersk-controlled hub of Suez Canal Container Terminal (SCCT) in Port Said, Egypt.
The Egyptian terminal opened last October and is majority controlled by A.P. Moller-Maersk, parent company of Maersk Sealand.
Maersk Sealand said the changes are the result of a prior agreement with SCCT that will also eventually see feeder coverage to and from SCCT extended to include the Black Sea area.
According to ComPair Data, the global liner-shipping database, at http://www.compairdata.com/ , Maersk Sealand has five weekly deep-sea container services calling at Gioia Tauro.
