Maritime association offering Shipping 101 course

The Maritime Association of the Port of New York and New Jersey is offering a one week class called “Shipping 101” this November.

“Many members of our community have observed that there needed to be an all-inclusive educational tool that would both provide an intensive introduction to the many facets of international water transportation, and show how it all fits together,' said Edward J. Kelly, executive director of the association.

The course will cover the history and evolution of containerized shipping, major trade lanes and ports, how cargo is booked and priced, equipment control, intermodal transportation, and import and export documentation. Terminal operations are explained, and participants are given a tour of the port. Participants also learn about bulk and breakbulk cargo.

The class will run all day from Nov. 5-9 at New York Shipping Association training facilities in Elizabeth. The course is offered in conjunction with the Artemus Group of Virginia Beach. For those interested in formal continuing education, continuing education credits are available from Old Dominion University.
