Marseilles throughput up 2.7% in 2005
The Port of Marseilles-Fos said Wednesday that cargo throughput in 2005 increased to 96.6 million tons, up 2.7 percent on 2004.
The increase was largely due to a 2.5-million-ton rise in oil volumes, the port said, despite the loss of oil revenue from a two-week strike by port authority dockworkers in October.
Container traffic, which grew 9 percent in 2004, dipped by 0.9 percent last year, compared to average growth of 11 percent among rival ports in northern Europe and 6 percent for competitors in the south.
