Mexico hot for U.S. beef

Mexico has become the number one export market for U.S.-produced beef, according to the U.S. Meat Export Federation.

In 2002, the value of U.S. beef and variety meat exports to Mexico was $854 million and Mexico became the number one export market for U.S. beef on a volume basis, overtaking Japan, said Phil Seng, chief executive officer of the federation.

Mexico is also the second-largest export market for U.S.-raised pork, valued at more than $250 million in 2002.

The federation plans to continue its aggressive U.S. red meat marketing campaign in Mexico.
