MOL strengthens ethical compliance system
The Mitsui O.S.K. Lines group has established an internal compliance advisory service desk that allows employees to report unethical behavior within the company, and leads to internal investigations of such reports.
The company has issued new rules of conduct to more clearly define ethical standards expected from all MOL personnel. MOL has now also revised the rules of conduct for MOL employees, increasing the number of clauses from five to 10.
MOL defines compliance as “promoting an open and visible management style that is guided by the highest ethical and social standards.” This includes not only following laws and regulations, but also strictly adhering to internal rules and regulations independently established by the company.
In November 2001, MOL previously reinforced its compliance structure by establishing compliance rules and regulations and organizing a compliance committee chaired by the vice president in charge of the administrative division.
Employees were then required to report breaches of compliance to the compliance officer. However, to deal with situations where it is difficult to follow that procedure, the company has now established the compliance advisory service desk.
The general manager of the internal audit office is now responsible for the compliance advisory service desk. Employees can report breaches of compliance to the desk by email, letter, or telephone. Anonymous reports of unethical behavior are prohibited.
MOL said that it will strictly maintain the confidentiality of the person who reported the alleged breach, as well as employees who cooperate in the investigation, to protect them from retaliation. The company will also guarantee that personnel who report breaches shall not be treated unfavorably.
