More carriers abandon Maritime Security Discussion Agreement

APL and Mitsui O.S.K. Lines have followed Maersk Sealand by deciding to leave the Maritime Security Discussion Agreement, a grouping of ocean carriers and terminal operators active in the United States.

The resignation of the two Asian carriers is the latest evidence that carriers will not adopt common security charges to pass on the cost of the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) code.

The grouping has sought to agree on joint security surcharges.

However, more than 40 companies still belong to the Maritime Security Discussion Agreement, including two sister companies of Maersk Sealand (APM Terminals North America and Maersk Pacific).
