Industry downturns caused by the coronavirus pandemic cost an additional 462 people their jobs, according to a new round of worker reduction notices to state officials on Friday.
According to reports, Spirit AeroSystems Inc., Basic Energy Services LP and Exterran Energy Solutions are among the transport and manufacturing industries that have conducted layoffs in recent days.
Spirit AeroSystems Inc. said it will be permanently closing it’s San Antonio manufacturing plant due to the grounding of Boeing’s 737 MAX. The Wichita, Kansas-based company is laying off 72 workers in San Antonio by Oct. 30.
“The global impact to the civil aviation market due to Covid 19 and the ongoing grounding of the Boeing 737 max have resulted in multiple production rate reductions for Boeing,” company Vice President Justin Welner said in a letter to the Texas Workforce Commission.
Fort Worth oil-field services company Basic Energy Services is laying off 216 people at two Texas locations. The company employs 1,580 drivers and has a fleet of 1,760 power units, according to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA).
Oil-field equipment maker and shipper Exterran is laying off 174 people at its plant in Houston, the company announced. The company employed 10 drivers with a fleet of 24 trucks at its Houston facility, according to the FMCSA.
