More than 80 ships a day in L.A., Long Beach

The number of ships in the Los Angeles-Long Beach harbor totaled 83 on Sunday, heralding more serious port congestion in the largest North American port complex.

The Marine Exchange of Southern California, which monitors vessel traffic, said the normal number of ships in L.A.-Long Beach is 30-50. Due to the larger number of vessels now in the harbor, it has had to modify the scale of its charts on vessel traffic.

Congestion is believed to have worsened since Labor Day.

A spokesman for the port of Los Angeles said that once ships come to the dock, they could be waiting 4 to 5 shifts to get labor.
