MTMC changes name to reflect new mission

The U.S. Military Traffic Management Command has been renamed the Surface Deployment and Distribution Command.

The name change for the agency, which is responsible for the military’s international ocean and land transportation moves, follows the recent change of name to the U.S. Transportation Command, now called the Defense Department’s Joint Distribution Process Owner.

“Over time, we have literally outgrown our name,” said Maj. Gen. Ann Dunwoody, commanding general of the Surface Deployment and Distribution Command. “Our new name change … better represents our number one priority and renewed focus to support the warfighter through deployment, sustainment and redeployment.”

“Traffic management will continue to be a key component of what we do, but it is only one of the tools in our arsenal,” she added.

The Surface Deployment and Distribution Command is headquartered in Alexandria, Va. and its operations center is located at Fort Eustis, Va.
