MTMC, TRUCKERS TO SEEK FASTER TRANSSHIPMENT

The U.S. Military Traffic Management Command has asked the trucking industry to assist the agency to improve the handling of over-land shipments.

“We want trucks in and out (of depots),” said Frank Galluzzo, director of MTMC’s Distribution Analysis Center in Alexandria, Va. He made this comment recently to the Government Traffic Policy Committee of the American Trucking Association.

The focus on the trucking side the of agency’s logistics management is part of the Strategic Distribution Management Initiative of the U.S. Transportation Command and Defense Logistics Agency.

Tom Boyle, ATA committee chairman and president of Boyle Transportation in Billerica, Mass., said flexible work schedules for federal workers are a big problem for truck deliveries. At the Crane, Ind.-based Naval Surface Warfare Center, for example, the Army works a five-day week, while the Navy works a four-day week.

“It is unbelievable,” Boyle said. “It is not just the Department of Defense, it is the government.”
