MTMC’s REENGINEERING SAVES $57.6 MILLION IN FISCAL 2000

MTMCÆS REENGINEERING SAVES $57.6 MILLION IN FISCAL 2000

The U.S. Military Traffic Management Command, the ocean and overland transport logistics arm of the armed forces, has saved taxpayers about $57.6 million, or about 5 percent, of its fiscal 2000 budget due to changes in the way the agency runs its operations.

“This is a huge, huge amount,” said Maj. Gen. Kenneth L. Privratsky, commander of MTMC. “The entire command has been good stewards of taxpayers’ dollars.”

Most of the savings came from reorganizations and streamlined operations that did not require MTMC to hire its full-authorized allocation of employees.

“We are 330 employees below program,” Privratsky said. “That is $20 million in savings.”

The changes are also benefiting shippers. “Our shipping rates are the same or declining,” Privratsky said. “That’s why we are doing it.”

In fiscal 2001, MTMC plans to reduce staff further, such as in the port units, which will be standardized in size and many functions consolidated. MTMC will also review a number of functions including headquarter operations, information management, container management and astray cargo.
