New 2,100-TEU ship joins Safmarine’s fleet
Safmarine has named the “Safmarine Cameroun,” the first of three 2,100-TEU containerships built by the Antwerp-based shipping line for its Europe-West Africa service.
The vessel is also the first ship that was built for Safmarine in more than 10 years, and the first to be purchased by Safmarine since the company became part of the A.P. Moller-Maersk group five years ago.
The “Safmarine Cameroun” has an on-board crane and its “relatively wide, short and shallow” design was chosen to accommodate the length and draft restrictions of West African ports and rivers, the company said.
The vessel was built in Germany by Volkswerft Stralsund, an A.P. Moller-Maersk owned shipyard.
Safmarine will also be replacing its “Big White” containerships on the Europe/South Africa service. The first of the new Europe/South Africa ships will enter into service in December.
