New 5,500-TEU ship for Hamburg Sud
Hamburg Sud has christened the “Monte Cervantes,” the first of six new ships built for its Europe/East Coast of South America trade.
The company, which had said the new ships would have capacities of 4,100 TEUs, now says the “Monte Cervantes'” capacity is 5,552 TEUs. It has 1,365 reefer container plugs.
The ship was built by the Korean shipyard Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering. Following delivery by the yard, the “Monte Cervantes” will be chartered out for several months to CMA CGM, before being phased into Hamburg Sud’s own services.
Its sister ships, the “Monte Olivia,” “Monte Pascoal,” “Monte Rosa,” “Monte Sarmiento” and “Monte Verde,” will be delivered by the fall of 2005.
