NEW FREIGHT EXCHANGE FREIGHTMART IS LAUNCHED

Freightmart, a privately owned company based in Los Angeles, has launched a freight exchange.

Freightmart offers importers, exporters and manufacturers the ability to post merchandise to be shipped by truck, air or ocean, the company said.

Contrary to earlier exchanges, based on the reverse bidding model, Freightmart will not see the lowest bids always win, David Dimas, sales and marketing manager, told American Shipper.

Freightmart will offer forwarders the ability to bid on posted shipments and post their empty equipment for shippers to choose.

The company said that it will take a 1 percent commission on transactions for originating the business. There is no cost to shippers to use the service. Its system will provide real time quotes on shipping bids, it said.

Freightmart said that it has 2,500 registered members, and its system has recorded 1.7 million hits in its first month.

The freight exchange company is the brainchild of its owner, Chris Tangkilisan.
