NEW WORLD ALLIANCE TO BRING 9TH TRANSPACIFIC SERVICE BACK

NEW WORLD ALLIANCE TO BRING 9TH TRANSPACIFIC SERVICE BACK

The New World Alliance of MOL, APL and Hyundai Merchant Marine, the largest alliance grouping in the transpacific trade, will resume a ninth transpacific weekly container service in June.

The alliance carriers had stopped one of their nine Asia/North America loops, the Pacific Northwest Express, last November, as cargo volumes subsided during the winter season and freight rates fell.

The new service, to be named PSV, will cover Pacific Southwest and Northwest ports, an official at MOL told American Shipper. However, some details need to be further elaborated before the service can be finalized between the alliance carriers and its exact configuration announced, he added.

Ocean carriers, who are taking delivery of a large number of new containerships this year, have benefitted from an increase in eastbound transpacific volumes since mid-February.
