The Port of New York and New Jersey attributed the increase in throughput primarily to the rerouting of West Coast cargo and an improving economy.
The Port of New York and New Jersey handled record cargo volumes in May, according to the most recent figures from the port.
During May, the port handled 322,681 containers (558,991 TEUs), which set a new record, exceeding the previous best month of March 2015, when 321,581 containers (559,264 TEUs) were handled. The May 2015 volumes represented a 12.1 percent increase compared to May 2014.
The port attributed the increase in throughput “primarily to containers routed here from the West Coast and the improving U.S. economy.”
Other East Coast ports like Savannah and Charleston have also reported higher volumes in May.
