NIMA cites compliance with Canada 96-hour rule

The U.S. National Imagery and Mapping Agency has issued a reminder that vessels heading to Canada must request clearance from Canadian authorities at least 96 hours prior to entering Canadian waters.

Where the estimated time of arrival for a ship in Canadian waters is less than 96 hours after the time the vessel departed its last port of call, a request for clearance must be submitted as soon as practicable.

The 96-hour rule is mandatory for all vessels of 500 tons gross tonnage or more; all vessels engaged in towing or pushing a ship where the combined tonnage is 500 tons gross tonnage or more; and all ships of any size carrying a pollutant or dangerous goods, or towing or pushing a vessel carrying a pollutant or hazardous cargo.
