Nippon Cargo modernizes 747 fleet
Nippon Cargo Airlines ordered four converted 747-400 freighters from Boeing Corp. to replace older 747s in its fleet. In February, the Japanese airline agreed to purchase three new Boeing 747-400 freighters straight off the production line.
NCA operates a fleet of 10 747-200 freighters and one 747-100 freighter. The 747-400 can carry 120 tons of cargo, 25 tons more than the 747-200, and consumes less fuel.
Nippon Cargo is the second customer for the 747-400 Special Freighter since Boeing said earlier this year it was starting a conversion program for the 747-400.
Boeing will license subcontractors to add a side cargo door, strengthen the main-deck floor and make other modifications. Boeing said it plans to redeliver the aircraft in August 2007.
All Nippon Airways is a principle shareholder of Nippon Cargo Airlines, but the Boeing announcement did not indicate whether the passenger planes would come from the passenger airline or other used airplanes repurchased by Boeing.
