NIT LEAGUE MEMBERS SUPPORT ENDING NVO TARIFF FILING
Shippers overwhelmingly support ending non-vessel-operating common carriers' filing of tariffs with the U.S. Federal Maritime Commission, according to a survey by the National Industrial Transportation League.
The NIT League survey found that 90 percent of shippers responding said that strict tariff adherence serves no useful purpose, and more than 70 percent support exempting NVO tariffs from government enforcement.
For years, the NVO industry has been trying to end the practice, and the NIT League survey results should bolster a tariff-filing exemption request, which the industry is expected to file with the FMC next month, said Ed Greenberg, maritime counsel to the National Customs Brokers and Forwarders Association of America.
The results of the survey were announced by NIT League’s public affairs vice president Kathy Luhn at the NCBFAA’s annual government affairs conference in Washington.
