No spill from tanker that struck pier along Mississippi

There've been no reports of oil pollution from a Maltese-flagged tanker that struck a pier Jan. 4 on the west bank of Mississippi River in Westwego, La., the U.S. Coast Guard said in a statement.

Observers reported a three-foot gash above the waterline on the port (left) side of the 793-foot vessel 'Tsunami,' which was carrying an estimated 20 million gallons of sweet crude oil.

Contracted clean-up workers have been containing a minor sheen of caustic soda that leaked into the Mississippi from broken piping at the pier. No injuries occurred ashore or on the 'Tsunami,' the Coast Guard said.
