Norfolk Southern experiences another hazmat accident
A Norfolk Southern freight train derailed in East Deer, Penn., Monday morning, spilling hazardous chemicals into the Allegheny River and forcing the evacuation of 200 persons.
Thirteen cars on the train jumped the track. Three of those cars contained hydrogen fluoride and two ended up in the river. One of the cars was punctured and leaking, according to news reports from the area.
No injuries were reported.
January was a tough month for Norfolk Southern. The derailment occurred three weeks after a switching error caused a Norfolk Southern train to collide with a parked locomotive in Graniteville, S.C. The accident caused the release of chlorine gas, killing nine people and forcing the evacuation of hundreds of people.
