NYK ORDERS FIVE MORE 6,200-TEU CONTAINERSHIPS
NYK Line has ordered five 6,200 TEU-class container vessels from the Korean shipyard Samsung Heavy Industries Co. Ltd.
Featuring a speed of 25 knots, the ships will be deployed in NYK’s Asia/Europe and transpacific services start in September 2001.
The Japanese carrier said that the ship order decision 'was made in concert with the long-term fleet plans of the Grand Alliance and as a part of NYK's container vessels replacement program.' The Grand Alliance comprises of NYK, Hapag-Lloyd, Malaysia International Shipping Corp., OOCL and P&O Nedlloyd.
When the five new 6,200-TEU vessels have been delivered, NYK will operate a total of 13 vessels too wide to transit the Panama canal.
