NYK orders two double-hull VLCCs
Japan’s Nippon Yusen Kaisha has ordered two 300,000 deadweight-ton double-hull very large crude carriers (VLCCs). One will be built by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. for delivery in second-half 2006 and the other by IHI Marine United Inc. for first-quarter 2007.
Both tankers will be 333 meters long and 60 meters wide. Including the latest two orders, NYK now has 11 VLCCs on order.
NYK had already adopted a policy of fitting double-hull fuel tanks for all of its VLCCs. The Japanese group said that it will have completed the shift of its VLCC fleet to a double-hull structure by the end of 2007.
