OLD DOMINION FREIGHT PULLS DEDICATED SERVICE FOR DEFERRED AIR FREIGHT

Old Dominion Freight Line Inc. has eliminated its six-month-old air-freight service because it is less efficient to operate and less reliable for shippers than its expedited less-than-truckload offering.

The Thomasville, N.C.-based LTL carrier started OD AirExpress in September to serve air-freight brokers, forwarders and airlines in the second-day air freight market. Old Dominion trucks provided line haul service between 51 U.S. airports, while customers arranged for separately for pick up and delivery.

Such an arrangement provided customers less speed, control and centralized package tracking ability than using OD Expedited to handle the whole movement of a shipment, the company said Friday.
