OMI CONTINUES TO BUILD PRODUCT TANKER FLEET

OMI Corp. will buy four parcel tankers for about $120 million.

Two of the vessels are 35,000 deadweight built in South Korea in 2000. One vessel was delivered on Sept. 10, and the other will be delivered on Sept. 30. Both vessels will be time chartered back to the owner for five years, OMI said.

The other two vessels are 37,000 dwt product carriers under construction in South Korea. Upon delivery in November and March, the vessels will commence three-year time charters.

“We continue our strategy of acquiring vessels for which we can obtain secure, profitable business,” said Craig H. Stevenson, chairman, chief executive officer and president of the Stamford, Conn.-based carrier.

OMI’s fleet comprises 26 vessels: six Suezmax tankers; three Panamax and two handysize crude oil tankers; 14 handysize and handymax product carriers, and one ultra large crude carrier. The company has on order at shipyards two Suezmax and 11 product carriers.
