OOCL EXPRESSES CONCERN OVER U.K. PORTS’ BOX CAPACITY

OOCL has expressed concern over the lack of handling capacity of British container ports.

“The U.K. system is really a mess,” Ted Wang, managing director of OOCL (Europe) told the Financial Times. “It’s much more serious than we thought.”

Ocean carriers are worried about port delays in Southampton and Felixstowe, the largest container ports in the United Kingdom.

Attempts to build new container terminals have so far met with strong opposition from environmental groups.

Wang said that the U.K. is “five to 10 years behind the rest of Europe” in port development.
