PANAMA CANAL TO STUDY COMMENTS ON TOLL HIKE

The Panama Canal Authority said it will “study” comments from 46 Canal customers made during a public hearing last Friday on a proposed Canal toll increase of 13 percent, plus a per-wire free for the use of locomotives, that will go into effect in October.

According to a statement by the authority, those customers who commented for the record expressed “their appreciation for the recent improvements in safety and efficiency of Canal operations, but also (said) the percentage increase is too high and poorly timed.”

The authority is an autonomous agency of the government of Panama, with responsibility for managing, operating and keeping up the Canal.
