Panama Canal transit time slows 5.8%
The Panama Canal Authority reported Tuesday the average time it takes a vessel to transit the canal, from January through March, increased 5.8 percent to 26 hours compared to 24.56 hours in the year earlier period.
During the same period, canal transits dropped 2.9 percent to 3,730 from 3,842. Transits of Panamax-sized vessels increased 6.6 percent to 1,396 from 1,310. Panama Canal/Universal Measurement System (PC/UMS) tonnage increased 3.9 percent to 70.9 million PC/UMS tons from 68.2 million PC/UMS tons.
