P&O NEDLLOYD NAMES REEFER CONTAINERSHIP

'The 'P&O Nedlloyd Remuera,' the largest refrigerated containership in the world, was named at a ceremony on Auckland's Princess Wharf Sunday.

The 'P&O Nedlloyd Remuera' can carry 4,100 TEUs, compared to the 2,700-TEU 'Eastabout' ships that have up to now maintained the trade between New Zealand and northern Europe.

The new ship, one of 10 being built primarily to serve the New Zealand and Australian exports to Europe and the U.S. East Coast, has 1,300 power plugs for 20-foot and 40-foot high-cube integral refrigerated containers.

The new series of ships has been named the Albatross Class and P&O Nedlloyd will introduce seven of the ships to the trade in the next year. Partner operator CP Ships will add another three vessels of the same size, providing a fixed-day, weekly Australia/New Zealand/Europe/U.S. service.

The 'P&O Nedlloyd Remuera' will be phased into the Eastabout service in March.
