PORT EVERGLADES FIRST-EVER COMMON-USER TERMINAL OPENS

PORT EVERGLADES FIRST-EVER COMMON-USER TERMINAL OPENS

South Stevedoring Inc. on Friday opened the first-ever common-user terminal at Port Everglades, Fla.

The company has a 20-year lease with Broward County to operate the terminal, which is open to any steamship line that wants to move cargo through the port. Port Everglades had only leased terminal space to individual steamship lines for their private use.

South Stevedoring said its total investment in the terminal will be as much as $11.5 million, which includes a high-tech gate and security system and operating vehicles and equipment.

The terminal will use an electronic cargo-ticketing system monitored by a computerized control center. Cargo is monitored by a remote-controlled video system, and drivers must pass a computerized full-hand scan to verify their identity.
