Port Everglades starts Fleet Week
Port Everglades kicked off its weeklong Fleet Week activities Monday morning, welcoming six U.S. Navy vessels and several accompanying U.S. Coast Guard vessels as part of the annual event to celebrate U.S. military personnel.
With the Navy ships coming into the port, commercial vessel traffic into the port was halted for about five hours beginning at 6:30 a.m. The event will not impact commercial vessel operations for the remainder of the week.
Fleet week is a major event for Port Everglades and the Fort Lauderdale area, with thousands of military personnel visiting and a massive spectator turnout to see the ships. The week culminates with the McDonald's Air & Sea Show, featuring the vessels and air shows featuring military aircraft.
