Port of Boston’s box volume up 7.7% in 2005

The Port of Boston handled 188,869 TEUs in 2005, a 7.7 percent increase compared to 175,444 TEUs in 2004.

Total container tonnage in 2005 was up 8 percent to 1.45 million tons from 1.34 million tons in the previous year.

“Over the last few years, we have seen a steady rise in the amount of cargo handled in Boston,” said Mike Leone, port director at the Massachusetts Port Authority. “We expect that to continue, and have taken aggressive steps to meet that demand. Massport has begun infrastructural improvements at Conley Terminal, as well as facilitated the development of support services including warehousing, storage and transloading centers at a nearby site.”

Conley Terminal is undergoing a $25 million capacity enhancement project that will boost its cargo handling capacity by 50 percent. The project is expected to be completed in December this year.
