Port of Jacksonville reopens after capsized barge blocks channel
The Port of Jacksonville reopened to commercial vessels Friday afternoon more than 12 hours after a dredge barge capsized near the Jacksonville Port Authority's Blount Island terminal.
According to U.S. Coast Guard reports, a tugboat hit the 60-foot barge about midnight, causing about 600 feet of dredge pipe to break in two sections in the St. Johns River between the terminal and the Intracoastal Waterway.
A salvage operation was underway Friday. The barge was carrying about 700 gallons of fuel but only about five to 10 gallons was spilled.
