PORT OF LONG BEACH HARBOR COMMISSIONER KASHIWABARA RETIRES
John E. Kashiwabara will retire from his position as harbor commissioner of the port of Long Beach on Jan. 31.
The 81-year-old retired family physician is the first Japanese-American to serve on the harbor commission. Kashiwabara headed numerous port trade missions to Asia, including visits to Japan, where his knowledge of the culture and language was particularly valuable, the port of Long Beach said.
Kashiwabara was harbor commission president two years ago, when the port reached agreement with Hanjin Shipping, of South Korea, on the lease for a large container terminal in the port of Long Beach.
