Port of New Orleans prepares for Hurricane Ivan
The Port of New Orleans shut down all operations at noon Tuesday in anticipation of Hurricane Ivan. Seven working vessels have been tied up for safe harbor at wharves in the port.
The Association Branch Pilots discontinued pilot service at the mouth of the Mississippi River, which effectively closed the river for ships entering and leaving. Other pilots groups that steer oceangoing vessels along the river were expected to do the same by evening, which would halt the movement of vessels along the lower Mississippi.
The anticipated storm caused port-related events to be postponed.
