Port of Savannah handles 1 million TEUs in first half FY 2006

The Georgia Ports Authority reported Monday that the Port of Savannah handled slightly more than 1 million TEUs in the first six months of its fiscal year 2006, up 16.2 percent compared to the same period last year.

“It was less than five years ago that the GPA first surpassed 1 million TEUs for a whole year,” said Doug Marchand, executive director of the Georgia Ports Authority. “Today, not only are we handling the same cargo in half the time, but we are doing it without delays at our gates or on our terminals.”

The port of Brunswick handled 1.2 million tons of cargo in the six months ended Dec. 31, an increase of 10.2 percent over the year earlier period.

The Georgia Ports Authority also operates the inland barge operations in Bainbridge and Columbus.

In a separate development, Bartow Morgan, chairman and chief executive officer of local family-owned Brand Banking Co., has joined the ports authority’s board of directors.
