Port of Tacoma: Redeveloped breakbulk terminal drives record volumes
Port of Tacoma officials said Tuesday they are attributing the Pacific Northwest port’s increasing share of breakbulk and project cargo to renovation and consolidation of breakbulk activities at its Terminal 7.
In recent years, cargo like this may have been routed through the Gulf Coast and Panama Canal, said Susan Becklund, the port’s director of Operational Services.
“Today, shippers are recognizing that Tacoma offers a price- and time-competitive breakbulk alternative,” she said.
Tacoma is expecting another record year for breakbulk cargo, with volumes up 19.7 percent compared to the same period in 2005.
“By 2010, we expect breakbulk to grow by another 30 percent over 2005 levels,” Senior Director of Operations and Maintenance John Bush said in a statement.
