Portland container volumes down 19%
The port of Portland's container volumes were down 19 percent in 2004 at 274,609 TEUs, compared to 339,571 TEUs in the port’s previous record year of 2003.
During the year carriers such as Hyundai Merchant Marine and “K” Line stopped calls at the port.
Overall freight volumes through Portland’s marine terminals jumped 5.2 percent to a record 12.5 million tons in 2004, compared to 11.9 million tons in 2003. “Sizable increases in grain exports and steel breakbulk imports helped drive the record year despite the fact that the number of vessel calls decreased,” the port said in a statement.
