Rail freight based Eurasia logistics company launched in Moscow

The freight arms of four state-run railways in Eastern Europe have formed a logistics joint venture to be based in Moscow.

Eurasia Rail Logistics has been set up by Deutsche Bahn AG, R-D Russian Railroads, PKP Cargo S.A. in Poland and the Belarus Railroads with the aim of improving freight transport on the corridor from Germany to Asia via Russia.

'Customers of the railroads involved should be able to count on shorter transit times,' the new company said in a statement. 'Furthermore it is hoped that the different legal standards will be harmonized and operating agreements worked out which will minimize transport times and border stops. An improved networking of the IT systems of the various railroads should also facilitate a comprehensive tracking and tracing system.'

Joachim Gerigk, previously a transport network development executive for Deutsche Bahn, has been appointed as chief executive officer of the new company.
